What Fabrics Work with DTF Transfers?

One of DTF's biggest advantages is fabric versatility. Unlike sublimation (white polyester only) or screen printing (mostly cotton), DTF transfers adhere to almost any textile. Here's what works and how to press each fabric.

Cotton (100%)

Compatibility: Excellent — DTF's best fabric
Press temp: 325°F / 15 seconds
Quality: Vibrant colors, strong adhesion, soft hand feel

Cotton is the gold standard for DTF. The natural fibers accept the TPU adhesive perfectly, resulting in the most durable and vibrant prints. This includes jersey knit, canvas, denim, flannel, and muslin.

Polyester (100%)

Compatibility: Excellent — with lower heat
Press temp: 285°F / 10 seconds
Quality: Bright colors, smooth finish

Polyester works great with DTF. The key is lower temperature to prevent dye migration (the fabric's dye bleeding into the transfer). Use a Teflon sheet and consider a cold peel for best results. Includes dri-fit, performance wear, and satin.

Cotton-Poly Blends (50/50, 60/40)

Compatibility: Excellent
Press temp: 305°F / 12 seconds
Quality: Great adhesion, balanced hand feel

Blends are the most common blank shirt fabric and work perfectly with DTF. Use middle-ground settings between cotton and polyester.

Nylon

Compatibility: Good — requires care
Press temp: 275°F / 8-10 seconds
Quality: Good adhesion, requires low temp

Nylon is heat-sensitive. Use the lowest DTF-compatible temperature, light pressure, and always use a Teflon sheet. Common items: windbreakers, bags, flags, and athletic shorts.

Canvas & Duck Cloth

Compatibility: Excellent
Press temp: 325°F / 15-18 seconds
Quality: Strong adhesion, durable

Canvas is heavier and denser than t-shirt fabric, so it may need slightly longer press time. Perfect for tote bags, aprons, hats, and shoes.

Denim

Compatibility: Excellent
Press temp: 325°F / 15 seconds
Quality: Vibrant on dark denim, retro look

DTF on denim creates a unique textured look. The white underbase ensures bright colors even on dark indigo denim. Great for jackets, jeans, and tote bags.

Leather & Faux Leather

Compatibility: Good — test first
Press temp: 275°F / 8-10 seconds
Quality: Varies by leather type

DTF can adhere to smooth leather and faux leather surfaces. Use low heat, light pressure, and always test on a scrap piece first. Not recommended for suede or heavily textured leather.

💡

Tip: Faux leather (PU leather) tends to work better than genuine leather because of its smoother, more uniform surface.

Fabrics to Avoid

Waterproof/water-resistant coatings: The DWR coating prevents adhesion.
Heavily textured fabrics: Deep pile fleece, terry cloth, and shag prevent full contact with the transfer.
Heat-sensitive fabrics: Anything that melts below 275°F (some cheap polyester, vinyl, and plastic-coated fabrics).
Waxed fabrics: Waxed canvas and oilcloth resist adhesion.

When in doubt, always test on a scrap piece before pressing your finished transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use DTF transfers on any color fabric?
Yes. DTF includes a white underbase layer, so colors appear vivid on any fabric color — white, black, red, neon, etc. This is a major advantage over sublimation, which only works on white/light fabrics.
Do DTF transfers work on moisture-wicking performance shirts?
Yes. Use 285°F for 10 seconds with a Teflon sheet. The transfer adheres well to dri-fit and moisture-wicking polyester. The print area won't wick moisture, but the rest of the garment functions normally.
Can I DTF print on hats and caps?
Yes. Cotton and polyester hats work great. You'll need a hat press attachment or a small flat press with a curved pad. Use standard fabric-appropriate temperature settings.
Do DTF transfers work on tote bags?
Yes. Canvas tote bags are one of the best surfaces for DTF. Use cotton settings (325°F, 15 seconds). The canvas provides a firm, flat surface that's perfect for pressing.
